Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch
From DoomWiki.org
Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch, also abbreviated as MM8BDM, is a total conversion created by Cutmanmike and "Team Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch". The mod makes use of the 8-bit graphics and style of the original Mega Man series of games for the Nintendo Entertainment System while providing the first person shooter gameplay experience of the Doom series. The modification was originally for Skulltag, and moved to Zandronum after its fork.
Approximately a year of work was invested in the project. A demo version was playable at the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention on July 2-4, 2010, and the demo was released to the public on July 7. The full version, v1.0a, was officially released on October 8, 2010. It was packaged with Skulltag v0.98e Alpha. In March 2013, it became one of five indie games included in the fourth Free Bundle. As of March 10th, 2023, the current version is v6b.
At the 17th Annual Cacowards it was recognized as Best Multiplayer Level.

Features[edit]
Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch strives to unify Doom-style game play with the Mega Man universe. All of the graphic resources have been replaced with the colorful 8-bit Mega Man series graphics, with a number of entirely new resources also added.
Every Robot Master from Mega Man 1 through 10, including Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, and Mega Man V (Gameboy), are implemented as playable characters, alongside several other series characters. Each possesses a number of new animations and rotation frames.
There are over 100 new weapons the player can use; each Robot Master's weapon is in the game, as well as some extras. The default weapon is Mega Man's Mega Buster for all robots. Most weapons have been changed to fire projectiles rather than hitscan attacks.
A number of items are implemented in the game which the player can use to help them along. There are also surprises and unlockable features.
Single Player Mode[edit]
While the primary focus of the game is on the multiplayer element, the game also features a full-fledged story mode. Much like Quake III Arena's single player mode, the story mode is a campaign spanning 121 of the deathmatch levels, plus several boss arenas.
The story takes place one year after the setting of Mega Man 6. Mega Man, the blue-suited robot protagonist of the series, has beaten Dr. Wily, the villain of the games, for the sixth time. The evil doctor is in prison after masquerading as Mr. X, the founder of the World Robot Tournament. The real Mr. X has been found and, in gratitude of being saved, he announces that he will host the official Robot Tournament. However, he decides to make some minor changes: instead of each robot using their own weapons, they have to be equipped with Mega Man's Variable Weapon System—a system that can let them use a multitude of weapons and items—as well as his default Mega Buster. This way, the robots are judged on their skill and design, rather than their default combat equipment.
Just as the tournament is getting underway, the television broadcast signal is jammed and interrupted by none other than Dr. Wily himself. He specifically addresses Dr. Light, Mega Man's creator, and Mega Man himself, telling them that he will be entering his robots into the tournament in order to reclaim his title of "World's Best Robotics Genius". He taunts Dr. Light and Mega Man, challenging them to stop him from claiming the title. Mega Man, having a strong sense of justice, decides to go participate in the tournament to make sure Wily does not disrupt it. Dr. Light allows this, but knowing Mega Man cannot possibly fight off 40 robots by himself, he also sends with Mega Man all eight (six prior to Version 3) of his old robots (the bosses from the first game). At some point, Proto Man, Mega Man's predecessor and robot of mystery, also intervenes to help lighten the load. In version 5 moving onward, Mega Man is an NPC who helps the player with their journey to become a strong robot, with the player now taking the role of an original robot named Maestro, who is based off of a NormalNavi from Mega Man Battle Network.
The game is divided into thirteen separate chapters, each spanning one Mega Man game with locales made to look like levels from their respective games. As well as the deathmatch levels, at the end of each chapter lies a boss fight. In most cases, the player will not be fighting a stock bot; boss battles take a bit more time and skill. The bots are quite adept at using the boss weaponry and know exactly how each one works, with few exceptions.
Starting in Version 2, the story continues following the events of the tournament as the player is tasked with helping track down Dr. Wily following his disappearance at the end of Chapter 6. In Chapter 8, Wily sends out his next set of robots to retrieve samples of an alien energy that arrived on Earth, while Dr. Light repairs an alien robot named Duo after he crash-landed on his property. In the climax of Chapter 8, a second alien robot (simply named the Evil Energy Robot) interrupts a deathmatch between the player and the eight robots, stealing the alien energy from them, with Duo shouting that he was too late to stop the evil robot. Duo entrusts his weapon to the player who then fights the evil robot, seemingly destroying it. Wily then taunts the player about having more samples in another of his castles as he has greater plans with them.
In Chapters 9 and 10, the player is accompanied by two partners per level as they deal with an uprising led by King, who is leading this uprising due to an unfair law regarding the expiration dates on worker robots. As the player finishes the fight with him in his castle, King is jumped by a trio of robots based on Journey to the West, who proceed to throw him out the window before challenging the player themselves in the next set of stages, making up Chapter 10. After the chapter credits, King speaks to Dr. Cossack about working alongside him.
In Chapter 11, eight of Dr. Light's robots (this time from the ninth game) have sided with Wily after Dr. Light has been framed for plotting world domination. The player is tasked by Mega Man's sister Roll to pacify the eight robots and find Wily. After pacifying the eight robots, the player is able to find where Wily is hidden with two of the robots joining them, catching Wily in the middle of making dinner. The startled scientist informs the player that while they were storming his castle, an outbreak in a new virus has started to spread across the city. The player fights Proto Man at the end of the second to last stage in this chapter as Mega Man arrives to bring him home, before sneezing, revealing that he has become infected by the virus too. After fighting the boss of this chapter, the player's efforts are proven for naught as despite Dr. Light's innocence being proven, the virus has quickly started to spread over the world, known as "Roboenza". In a cutscene added in Version 5C, later serving as an intro to version 6, the player is revealed to have been infected by Roboenza as well and goes on a berserk frenzy in Dr. Light's lab, seeing images of the evil robot compelling them to follow through with their actions. Duo's spirit appears and purges the virus from the player, with Dr. Light then confirming that the player is immune to the virus.
Chapter 12 follows the stages of the tenth game up until the chapter boss, where Wily decides to take the player head on in a giant mech based on him. The player is joined by Duo and King having met up with each other thanks to Dr. Cossack. After the mech is destroyed, Duo is prepared to take Wily to jail, only for a new robot named Terra to attack Duo, kill him, and abduct Wily. Dr. Cossack arrives in the nick of time in a star ship piloted by himself and crewed by his daughter and his eight robots as the player chases after Terra and his eight allies, the Stardroids, in the thirteenth and final chapter. After arriving on an old space station made by Wily, the player is joined by Mega Man, Proto Man, and Bass in a raid on the station to find Wily and defeat the Stardroids. Wily later joins the player in defeating the Stardroids and directs them to the core of the station, where the leader of the Stardroids, Sunstar, awaits. After an intense battle, Sunstar is willing to work with the player, but he becomes possessed by the remains of the evil robot having snuck onto the space station. The fusion proceeds to cause the station to collapse, forcing the player to flee to an escape pod. In the final level, the player is given the task to fight this fusion, Eclipse, in a giant mech before launching it into the sun and ejecting the mech before reaching the sun. The player is saved by the remains of Sunstar who then crumbles to ash after arriving on earth.
Multiplayer Mode[edit]
The game includes as its main draw an impressive amount of new deathmatch levels—108 in total—as well as nine capture the flag stages. The game supports several official Skulltag game modes, as well as the InstaGib modifier, but not the Buckshot modifier.
Levels[edit]
There are 108 deathmatch and 25 capture the flag levels. The deathmatch levels are the main attraction of the game, being arenas based on the various boss levels of Mega Man 1-9, plus a fortress stage.
Weapons[edit]
Every robot master's weapon has been accounted for in this game from the Rolling Cutter, a boomerang-like scissor-head, to the Yamato Spear, a rapid-fire spearhead projectile. There are a few extra weapons to add even more variety.
Items[edit]
In addition to the weaponry, the game has a number of helpful items that can give players the edge over their opponents.
Enemies[edit]
The only destroyable enemies placed in normal levels are the 100 Watton and Dompan, both in Bright Man's level, which turn off and turn on the lights respectively. In certain boss fights, Mets, little helmeted fellows that spit bullets at you, can also be seen. Otherwise, the game is devoid of standard enemies.
However, the game does feature a number of bosses and mini-bosses based on similar encounters found within the Mega Man universe.
Chapter Bosses[edit]
- Yellow Devil - Able to split its powerful into chunks and smash you to death in record time.
- Guts Dozer - Massive, powerful, and able to generate Mets, this thing can quickly destroy an inattentive player.
- Doc Robot Endurance Match - One chance to defeat eight robots in a row.
- Cockroach Twin - As the player enters the chamber, he is greeted by two gray robots. But just as the fight gets started, Metool Daddy, a giant Met, stomps down and crushes them both. With its sheer size and endless supply of Mets, it is a force to be reckoned with.
- In versions 5 and 6, the Metool Daddy is replaced by the Cossack Catcher.
- Dark Man - He is back to destroy Mega Man once and for all! His force field works as both a weapon and a shield.
- In versions 5 and 6, the player fights alongside Proto Man in a 2v4 fight against all four Dark Men.
- Everybody! - A boss rush consisting of all the previous tournament opponents, a Mega Man series staple.
- Gamma - The peacekeeping robot from the past is not only back, but fully operational this time. How can you possibly stop something this powerful?
- Bass
- Wily Capsule
- Evil Energy Robot
- King
- Genesis Unit - All three robots decide to work together to take you down once and for all!
- Mega Mech Shark - An airborne battle against a gigantic shark-like airship as it spreads the Roboenza virus.
- On repeat playthroughs of the stage, the player is given a chance to partake in a fight with Fake Man, a counterfeit police robot made by Wily to arrest Dr. Light. The first phase is a police chase as the player is accompanied by Auto in his truck, with the second phase being a proper battle against one single Fake Man.
- Wily Robo Iron Golem
- Sunstar
- Eclipse
Mini-Bosses[edit]
In addition to the bosses, if certain requirements are met, the player can fight several mini-bosses. Beat them, and their weapon is obtained for the rest of the chapter.
- Enker - Fought in Chapter 2. Beat Flash Man's stage in under 5 minutes.
- Punk - Fought in Chapter 4. Beat Drill Man's stage in under 5 minutes.
- Ballade - Fought in Chapter 6. Beat Knight Man's stage in under 5 minutes.
