NOVA III is a Boom-compatible megawad released in 2019. Continuing from NOVA II: New Dawn and NOVA: The Birth, the project was aimed at newer or inexperienced Doom mappers. NOVA III went through a lengthy development cycle of four years, with multiple changes in management. The project was first publicly announced on the Doomworld forums with a sign-up and planning thread on December 22, 2015, under the leadership of James Collins (an_mutt). Development officially began on January 17, 2016.

Collins led the project for the first year of its development, but relinquished his role due to personal issues. Management was transferred to Brayden Hart (AD_79) on March 4, 2017. After further stagnation, management was again transferred to Alex Scott (Scotty) on January 7, 2018. Scotty would lead the project to its completion, with a first release candidate published on December 2, 2019. This was followed by a second release candidate on January 3, 2020, and third on January 20. With numerous fixes to bugs in between, the release candidates were played by The DWmegawad Club throughout January 2020 for further testing, leading to a fourth and final release candidate released on March 2, which was later uploaded to the idgames archive on March 12, 2020.

NOVA III received an honorable mention at the Cacowards in 2020.
