Doom multiplayer was designed for LAN play, and some areas had small communities of players who frequently played Doom together over null modem and network as well as local modem calls. In some cases players worked on Doom projects together and with other players outside of the local community.

Greater Stavanger area community[edit]

This was a group of many players, including Petter Hansen, Geir Hauge, Kim Roar Foldøy Hauge (Zokum), Martin Aalen Hunsager, Jan Endre Jansen, Anders Johnsen, Kim Malde, Henning Skogstø, Morten Strømsvold, and several other less active players.

They had a wide range of skills, like mapping, speedrunning, competitive deathmatch and tool programming. They hosted several LAN parties with players from all over the world attending. Jonas Feragen has also visited the group, and a member of the group visited him in Trondheim.

They started playing multiplayer games with null modem cables, upgraded to 10Base-T coax networking and later twisted pair networking. They played a lot of multiplayer games and beta tested other members' productions. The various members had common interests and different specialties, making this a well rounded group that had a lot of knowledge and skill in the Doom games, both from a technical point of view and gameplay view. They influenced each other and there was a certain competitive element. Almost all of them lived within an hour's travel of each other. They were mostly active from 1995 to 2005, but several of the members are still active in the Doom community as of 2022.

At one party, Jonas Feragen worked on Hell Revealed II and Anders Johnsen on Alien Vendetta simultaneously.
