The phosphorous grenade is the second, more scarce type of ammunition for the grenade launcher in Strife: Quest for the Sigil. Each pack of phosphorous grenades adds four shots to the player's supply, up to a total of 16 grenades without an ammo satchel, or 32 when one has been found or purchased. Phosphorous grenades can only be fired two at a time, and will fly forward and up in a wide arc. The grenades can bounce off of non-liquid floors, and can deal impact damage repeatedly to enemies upon contact. After a brief delay, the grenades will automatically detonate, spreading out into a large number of roving, burning flames which deal constant splash damage and can set enemies on fire. Enemies set ablaze will do additional damage to any other actors in their vicinity. These flames persist for a long period of time and can easily decimate enemy forces with only one firing of the weapon. Due to the unwieldy nature and extreme power of this ammo type, use of these grenades is best reserved to wide-open areas against large groups of foes, or singular enemies such as bosses. Use of phosphorous grenades at pinch points where enemies cannot reach the player while the player remains safe from the flames is an extremely effective tactic.
Note that inquisitors are completely immune to all effects of the phosphorous grenade except for the minor impact damage done by them before they explode.
The grenades are powered by white phosphorous, a form of the element which immediately burns when exposed to atmospheric oxygen. The effects of the phosphorous grenade can be avoided by the player through use of the environmental suit.
Phosphorous grenades cannot be purchased at any public shops, due to their dangerous and possibly illegal nature. However, Irale starts to sell phosphorous grenades for 75 gold per 4-shot unit in Tarnhill after the player has killed the Programmer and received Macil's advice about the Oracle.
