Prop Hunt is a multiplayer WAD designed for Zandronum, created by Frits and Hypnotoad. It was first released on April 21, 2014, and was inspired by a similarly named gamemode popular on Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2. Prop Hunt is a team-based game pitting two opposing teams against one another: the hunters and the props, with the latter trying to hide away from the former for the duration of the match, upon which they will win unless the hunters manage to catch them all. Prop Hunt does not come with its own dedicated mappack (although one such mappack was planned) but it can be played on any regular Doom II map.
Gameplay[edit]
Prop Hunt can be played on any regular deathmatch map for Doom II, and features two opposing teams: the hunters, who possess a limited arsenal, and the props, who are players camouflaged as items or decorations in the level. Upon starting a match, there is a 30 second cooldown in which the hunters are immobile and have no vision: during this time the props can attempt to find a good hiding spot, or blend themselves into a set of decorations or items in a way that seeks to avoid raising suspicion.
The hunters are equipped with several weapons: besides regular fists, they also get access to a shotgun, a chaingun, and a one-time use grenade launcher. However, each time a weapon is utilized it deducts health points off the shooter, thus requiring the weapons to be used strategically in order to prevent hunters from winning by just firing blindly into the map. The props do not possess any weapon, and are only able to run away and hide in the map. They do, however possess the ability to taunt, which can be risky as it can give their position away, but it is rewarded with a counter that takes place during the map.
Once five minutes have passed, the props win unless the hunters have managed to identify and kill them all. The mod also optionally employs a random class selector feature, making what role each player will play be randomly chosen.
