This article is about the monster in Doom: The Dark Ages. For other games, see:

The revenant is a returning enemy in Doom: The Dark Ages. Unlike previous incarnations, it wears a hooded cloak that bears some resemblance to the Grim Reaper. It has two shoulder-mounted missile launchers that shoot homing skulls, and it also carries a sickle as a melee weapon.

Tactical analysis[edit]

Unlike its predecessors, the revenant will try to remain airborne at all times, dashing left or right and firing blue homing skulls as it does so. The revenant can also charge its launchers to fire two fast-moving green skulls, which can be parried with the correct timing. Occasionally the revenant will enter an "ethereal" state before firing a sequence of six skulls; the revenant cannot be harmed by the Slayer's weapons in this form, but the second and fifth skulls can be parried to send them back at the revenant and force it back into solid form. At close range, the revenant will swing the sickle it carries in its left hand.

In solid form, the revenant can be stunned with shield charges and throws, at which point a single super shotgun blast at close range is enough to kill it.

Lore[edit]

Only the most broken and wretched victims of Hell can become revenants. Lone fighters and twisted scavengers without loyalty, their tortured minds find fleeting comfort in the suffering of their victims. Their homing skull-like missiles are created from their pure hatred. The revenant's torments briefly fade with each scream they manage to provoke, only to drive them even deeper into madness.

Pre-release[edit]

  • In the reveal trailer of the game, where the revenant first appeared, when it performed the missile barrage attack the monster did not change into its ethereal form. The skulls themselves were additionally orange-colored and not blue as in the final release.
  • In the Developer Direct event on January 23, 2025, the revenant could be seen in its ethereal form, but compared to the final game, when the dreadmace was shown, the weapon was able to kill it while it was in this state.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • Compared to the last two modern iterations, these creatures have empty eye sockets like the classic counterpart.
