SLADE is a modern, open-source, cross-platform level editor (except versions 3.0.0, 3.0.1 and 3.0.2) and WAD editor (since version 3.0.0) for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux created and maintained by Simon Judd (with code contributions by Gez to version 3).

Early development[edit]
The very first alpha version of SLADE (v0.1) was released on November 21, 2004.[1]
- SLADE 0.3 was released on February 15, 2005.[2]
- SLADE 0.4 was released on May 9, 2005.[3]
- SLADE 0.5 was released on May 30, 2005.[4]
- SLADE 0.6 was released on August 31, 2005.[5]
SLADE 1[edit]
- SLADE 1.01 was released on November 21, 2005.[6] It is the first full release.
- SLADE 1.02 was released on January 1, 2006.[7]
- SLADE 1.1 was released on February 6, 2006.[8]
- SLADE 1.11 was released on February 22, 2006.[9]
- SLADE 1.12 was released on March 14, 2006.[10]
- SLADE 1.13 was released on May 23, 2006.[11]
SLADE 2[edit]
- SLADE 2.0 beta version was released on June 6, 2007,[12] but was abandoned afterwards.
SLADE 3[edit]
- SLADE 3 beta 1 was released on January 29, 2010.[13]
- SLADE 3 beta 2 was released on March 2, 2010.[14]
- SLADE 3 beta 3 was released on March 30, 2010.[15]
- SLADE 3 beta 4 was released on April 6, 2010.[16]
- SLADE 3 beta 5 was released on May 17, 2010.[17]
- SLADE 3 beta 6 was released on August 20, 2010.[18]
- SLADE 3 beta 7 was released on October 20, 2010.[19]
- SLADE 3.0.0 was released on November 7, 2010.[20] It is the first full release. It is a merging of SLADE and SLumpEd.
- SLADE 3.0.1 was released on February 16, 2011.
- SLADE 3.0.2 was released on July 25, 2011.[21]
- SLADE 3.1.0 was released on June 20, 2014, after over 3 years of development.
- SLADE 3.1.1 was released on February 28, 2016.
- SLADE 3.1.2 was released on November 27, 2018. This release added Lua scripting feature for interaction with SLADE.
- SLADE 3.1.3 was released on December 8, 2018.
- SLADE 3.1.4 was released on December 26, 2018.
- SLADE 3.1.5 was released on May 7, 2019.
- SLADE 3.1.6 was released on August 22, 2019.
- SLADE 3.1.7 was released on October 30, 2019.
- SLADE 3.1.8 was released on November 22, 2019.
- SLADE 3.1.9 was released on February 17, 2020.
- SLADE 3.1.10 was released on February 20, 2020.
- SLADE 3.1.11 was released on March 4, 2020.
- SLADE 3.1.12 was released on May 26, 2020.
- SLADE 3.1.13 was released on June 1, 2021.
- SLADE 3.2.0 was released on April 12, 2022. This release added UMAPINFO and MBF support.
- SLADE 3.2.1 was released on May 13, 2022.
- SLADE 3.2.2 was released on April 1, 2023. This release added Doom 32X support.
- SLADE 3.2.3 was released on May 31, 2023. This release added MBF21 support.
- SLADE 3.2.4 was released on June 21, 2023.
- SLADE 3.2.5 was released on December 19, 2023. This release added EDGE-Classic support.
- SLADE 3.2.6 was released on May 28, 2024.

WAD editor features:

- Lump manipulation in WADs and ZIP (STORE and DEFLATE only at the moment)
- Ability to open archives-within-archives
- Ability to open many other game archive formats (Duke Nukem 3D GRP files, Blood RFF files, Shadowcaster DAT and LIB files, Quake PAK files, SiN archives, etc.)
- Playback for many audio formats, including:
- MUS, MIDI, HMI, HMP, XMI, played through FluidSynth
- Doom's sound format (only extant utility able of handling correctly the padding bytes)
- Doom's PC speaker sound effects
- Several simple PCM formats used in games contemporary to Doom (Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Wolfenstein 3D, etc.)
