The shield soldier is a demonic monster in Doom: The Dark Ages, playing a similar role to previous games' shielded former humans such as the possessed security and soldier.

Tactical analysis[edit]

Shield soldiers may carry metal shields or energy shields. Metal shields must be hit with gunfire until they glow to indicate they are superheated, at which point throwing the shield saw will break the shield. Energy shields can be overloaded with either plasma-class weapon (the accelerator or the cycler), causing them to explode and damage nearby demons. With the 'Power Surge' upgrade, throwing the shield saw at plasma shield causes it to bounce to nearby enemies, faltering even the largest demons.

Shield soldiers may be encountered individually or in phalanxes. Phalanxes will stand their ground and fire their guns from behind their shields. They can also fire shield-like walls that must be blocked or dodged. Breaking a single shield in the formation will destroy the entire phalanx, leaving behind a shower of armor shards.

Lore[edit]

The demonic shield soldiers carry dreadsteel shields, extracted from and forged in Hell's volcanic pits. As such, they are imbued with a malevolent aura and are not only a strong defense but also a symbol of Hell's power and relentlessness.
