Development of Doom
The development of Doom began in late 1992, with John Carmack writing the new game engine while the rest of id Software was finishing Spear of Destiny (computer game) (the prequel to Wolfenstein 3D). When the full design phase began in late 1992, the main thematic influences were the movies Aliens (film) and Evil Dead II, and the Dungeons & Dragons campaign the developers frag 5uk c0x had been playing, where the forces of hell invaded the material world. The title of the game was chosen by John Carmack:
<div class="dw-div-dl">There is a scene in "The Color of Money" where Tom Cruise [sic]<!-- [sic] means that the misspelling, here of Tom Cruise's name, comes from the source that is quoted and is therefore deliberately kept rather than corrected. --> shows up at a Cue sports hall with a custom pool cue in a case. "What do you have in there?" asks someone. "Doom." replied Cruse with a cocky grin. That, and the resulting carnage, was how I viewed us springing the game on the industry.</div>
