Aliens conversion for Quake[edit]

Actually, the Aliens conversion for Quake was finished and released in early April 1997. However, Twentieth Century Fox immediately had their lawyers contact the developers to shut down the project site. The developers' message is still on the web: http://www.student.nada.kth.se/~nv91-gta/quake/ Since quite a few people downloaded the mod before Fox shut it down it is probably possible to get a copy if you talk to the right people. Unfortunately I never got the chance to play the game, since I didn't have a computer with Quake at that time, so I don't know if it could live up to the expectations. /213.66.200.148 11:15, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Distribution package question[edit]

The idgames distributions of the TC, and some others, come with copies of DEHACKED.EXE and DEUSF.EXE.  Does anyone remember if this had copyright implications?  (I have no idea where one can find ancient versions of these programs to read their readme files.)    Ryan W 07:38, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

Actual release date[edit]

Do we have an actual release date for Aliens TC? I've noticed that the Timeline of mod releases page cites October 19th, 1994 as the date, but that's based on a Usenet thread talking about it. I did some digging and while archive.org is still currently down I can only do so much (which has really grim portents for the future of internet history if it were to go down permanently) I did confirm that it does seem to have been released within a few days of the 19th -- I found a post dated the 18th mentioning that it was in /newstuff but no specific date on that either. --june gloom (talk) 19:05, 15 October 2024 (CDT)

Change to Boom-compatible[edit]

Just like Sacrament, this wad is verifiably designed to be played in Boom despite being said to target vanilla Doom. Specifically, Aliens TC E2M4 and E2M9 require Boom to be played properly.

In the case of Sacrament, it has been listed on the wiki as being Boom-compatible while a disclaimer has been added that says the official documentation incorrectly identifies it as vanilla Doom compatible. It is reasonable to add this disclaimer to the Aliens TC page also, and for consistency it would make sense to also just label Aliens TC as Boom-compatible rather than for vanilla Doom. While we're at it, following the very same logic, Arrival should be labeled Boom-compatible rather than targeting vanilla Doom because it has a MAP32 that is designed for Boom. But I'm not convinced that it is always ideal to override official recommendations based on a few odd maps.

No doubt there are tons of wads out there that have been tested on and effectively designed for one particular engine, and are erroneously officially stated to be for some other engine that are untested and have problems playing it. Though I am only aware of these three cases, for the moment.

Currently, my opinion is this:

  • Keep Sacrament listed as Boom-compatible with the disclaimer. This is practical.
  • Do the same thing with Aliens TC; change it to Boom-compatible and add a disclaimer. This hurts a bit because it is a famous Doom mod, but this change is practical and demonstrably correct.
  • Do not do it with Arrival, but do have a disclaimer, ideally add a little star so it says "Port: Limit Removing*" that you can somehow inspect to find out that MAP32 is for Boom. This makes sense because this level is special and detached from the rest of the wad, requiring deliberate warping to the level from the command line so you have some idea of what you're getting into.

"verifiably designed to be played in Boom" requires Justin Fischer to have had some impressive soothsaying talent, since Aliens TC was released in 1994, and Boom was released in 1998. --Gez (talk) 08:17, 25 April 2025 (CDT)
The original version was released in 1994, but the 2.0 version of Aliens TC which all the Aliens TC map pages on Doom wiki are built around, was released in 2000. The documentation provided the mod download describes Boom and ZDoom, so my points stand. -Inuk (talk) 08:42, 25 April 2025 (CDT)
