Secret sectors[edit]

After fixing some pattern matching in textmapStats.php I can confirm Getsu Fune's secret sector numbers in the low spec edition. In the full edition they are:

  1. (sector 18388)
  2. (sector 22841)
  3. (sector 23448)
  4. (sector 23779)
  5. (sector 23781)
  6. (sector 23786)
  7. (sector 32351)
  8. (sector 32358)
  9. (sector 32370)

I suspect the descriptions remain the same, so each parenthesized sector number could just get the corresponding one appended. --Xymph (talk) 08:25, 19 December 2020 (CST)

Lag[edit]

Yes, I know, everyone's favorite topic. But seriously, check out the UV max video. Starting around the 38 minute mark there are noticeable lag spikes in that cavernous final arena with lots of lighting effects. Two other instances are the 42 minute mark and 44:50. And this was with the Low Spec version :) So I think lag should be mentioned somewhere in this article, with the refs Dynamo removed, but I won't change it without consensus here. --PhilthyPhilistine (talk) 17:28, 30 January 2022 (CST)

On second thought, perhaps the article is fine as-is. For me, Bastion is unique in that I had such ambivalent feelings about it. It's the most visually stunning Doom map ever made, a true artistic masterpiece. No other map comes close to its dark, menacing regality. It's an amazing-looking Demon citadel, and Weekly's song is perfect for it. But the ornate styling and elaborate lighting effects come at an obvious performance penalty. Hence the ambivalence.
I've only experienced lag twice with classic Doom. The first was Winter's Fury soon after I started playing and was curious about all the neat stuff on the ZDoom forums. It had unplayable lag, probably a few frames per second. Since I'd already customized many GZDoom settings, I decided that there are so many maps worth trying, and I wouldn't waste a moment trying to get this one to work reasonably. So I exited and deleted the pk3. I didn't try Bastion until much later; I knew of its reputation going in and had seen some Youtube footage. I just wanted to try the Low Spec version with my EVP-based setup. Sure enough, the moment I turned on the flashlight (which I keep on virtually all the time), I had unplayable lag. For the sake of science, I decided to just play vanilla (no mods) to see what would happen. I played about 15 minutes without lag, but that was enough menacing slaughter for me.
At this point, I'm no longer interested in making an issue of this. It helped that I found Ancalagon's UV max video a few days ago. I had a lingering desire to see some more Bastion, and what a treat to see an elite runner playing GZ-style with freelook and jumping. He pulled off some cool maneuvers by jumping on enemies. I've always played with freelook and jumping (sv_jump 2 is one of the first console commands I learned :) so it's awesome to see what an elite can do with it.
So this is a bit of a blog post, but it does provide some relevant context. If others want to chime in and add some mention of lag in the article (perhaps a new section titled Low Spec version) I agree with that. If nobody wants it, I'm fine with that too. --PhilthyPhilistine (talk) 14:12, 31 January 2022 (CST)
