I'd be intrigued to know more about the history of this. It says that "the developer" put the beta on his website. Does this mean that a member of the development team released it on his own personal website when it was canned? If so, do we know who was responsible for the Chex Quest games? This article and the HOTU review still have similar wording, although later edits did mix in some paraphrasing. A complete rewrite (eventually) would IMHO be erring on the side of caution. As a side effect, we have no straightforward way of answering Fraggle's question, since HOTU is a secondary source that doesn't provide bibliographies for its reviews (which is neither good nor evil, but simply their custom).
