Talk:Codex/Weapons

Why was this page considered violation?[edit]

It says it's a textdump from the fandom wiki, but it's really a textdump from the GAME. The text is all in the game. Even if the stuff that can't be found in-game is copied from the other wiki, couldn't we just remove those minor bits and everything would be fine? Quinn today (talk) 03:42, 13 September 2020 (CDT)

It's being a textdump from the game which is the problem. The wiki has always shied away from directly using game resources (e.g. an article about a monster is going to be illustrated with screenshots, not with a sprite sheet) and so that makes content like verbatim copies of the entire codex a problematic area. Can it be considered fair use? It goes beyond a short excerpt for illustration purposes. Without a clear authorization from id Software or Bethesda that our wiki is allowed to put text dumps from the game, we'd prefer not to have them.
And yes the other wiki does not have such qualms, which is also a problem because, let's be honest, people are going to search for codex content and they're going to find it on fandom and not here. But there's not much we can do about it.
Anyway that's the main issue. Articles on the codex pages are welcome if they don't contain a full copy of the text from the game. Just giving a list of codex pages and a short overview/summary of what each one says would be appreciated; copyright infringement isn't. --Gez (talk) 08:02, 13 September 2020 (CDT)
