Talk:DOOM2.WAD

From DoomWiki.org

Can anyone verify the numbers? My IWAD doesn't cause desync with any demo I've encountered, but I'm not still 100% sure it's the "right" version. The last modified date is 1996-05-29. Fredrik 17:07, 9 Jan 2005 (PST)

Yeah, they look okay. Fraggle 10:40, 10 Feb 2005 (GMT)

doom2 versions[edit]

Moved from User talk:Splarka

Hi! I notice you stuck a sum down for the v1.7 of DOOM2.WAD. I was just wondering how you came across that IWAD -- User:Fraggle and I have been trying to collect different doom versions and we've managed to get most of them via the incremental patches to early versions (e.g. doom2 CDs are usually 1.666). But We can't find a path to 1.7 this way. -- Jdowland 21:36, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I have a friend in Texas who I used to play doom with a lot, he has several versions including 1.7 (I think he got it on CD, used). I am pretty sure it is the correct 1.7 as the 1.7->1.7a upgrade patch works with it perfectly. As a side note, why did you revert this? I was able to download and CRC/MD5 the 8-25-94 version and it matched perfectly. DeHackEd even lists it as pirated. What is the date on your version? --Splarka (talk) 03:22, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Looking around, it seems possible that all three (unpirated, dated 8-24-94 or 9-20-94, and pirated, dated 8/25/94) have the same MD5 and are the same file (except for the date). I am going to re-add this information, since it is rather important for people trying to patch. See: [1]: "Doom2 v1.666 (dated 8-24-94 or 9-20-94) and Doom2 v1.7 (dated 9-21-94) to Doom2 v1.7a. Note: there is -no- patch for Doom2 v1.666 dated 8/25/94. This version has been declared "pirated" by id Software and is no longer supported.". I can verify that the MD5 for the DOOM2.WAD with that "pirated" date is 30e3c2d0350b67bfbf47271970b74b2f. --Splarka (talk) 03:39, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Now I am a bit confused, this page [2] shows some CRCs, and the pirated one I checked is e2a683bd:
Doom II v1.666 (250894) DOOM2.WAD 14943400 25-08-94 e2a683bd
Doom II v1.666 (290894) DOOM2.WAD 14824716 29-08-94 c08005f7
Doom II v1.7 DOOM2.WAD 14612688 21-09-94 47daeb2e
Doom II v1.7a DOOM2.WAD 14612688 18-10-94 952f6baa
Doom II v1.9 DOOM2.WAD 14604584 01-02-95 ec8725db
Now, if the one you have is the one dated 08/25/94 then, whether you got it on CD or not, id considers that version pirated.
All I can verify then, is the 1.666 8-25-94 and 1.7, 1.7a and 1.9. Is your 1.666 dated 8-24, 8-25, 8-29, or 9-20? --Splarka (talk) 03:58, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
I reverted it because it indicated that an IWAD with that md5sum was illegal, and I have evidence to the contrary. The date on the IWAD on the CD is 1994-08-30. However I'm not sure how useful the date is for identifying pirated copies as it is very easy to lose the date by copying the file around. E.g., I cannot provide a suitable date for the 1.8 IWAD because it was set to the date I ran PATCH.EXE.
Feel free to add info to the article about identifying pirated copies of the IWAD. Please be clear that the md5sum is not useful for identifying pirated IWADs, however. I know nothing about it so I'd be interested. Please do include citations/references or evidence, and e.g. the fact dehacked checks for pirated copies is useful to be included too. -- Jdowland 19:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, well, if your MD5 and my MD5 are the same, for the two different dates, perhaps the executable is different. What do you have? (see below for what this one shows) --Splarka (talk) 02:53, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Veddy interesting. Maybe this wiki needs articles on DOOM.EXE and DOOM2.EXE for clarification? ...or maybe nobody cares ^_^. --Splarka (talk) 07:41, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea. Does dehacked check the IWAD date, or the EXE date? -- Jdowland 05:39, 17 October 2006 (PDT)
I found the following string in DEHACKED.EXE:
You are not using a legal copy of Doom. This copy (created on
8/25/94) was stolen from Id and spread widely by software pirating
groups. This is a lame way to have fun at the expense of a cool
company like Id. Buy a legal copy of Doom today!
That seems to indicate that it uses the date rather than a sum, but doesn't seem to indicate whether it checks the EXE or the IWAD. My MZ dissassembly skills aren't too hot... -- Jdowland
OK found the dehacked source. It checks the filesize of the EXE and considers it illegal if it is 686921L bytes long. So, the IWAD is not considered. Jdowland
Aha, gotcha. Also, I was just using dehacked to check if the version was pirated (lazy, since I didn't feel like attempting a patch), but I think more people would be interested in the patching aspects of 1.666 -> 1.7a not working for the illegal copy. However, what with the availability of open source ports, they could hypothetically upgrade just the wad file (which is possibly the same checksum for all 4 dates on 1.666) to 1.7a and from there to 1.9. Interesting... --Splarka (talk) 21:39, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Here's a clarification about something, the 1.666 8-29-94 dated english & german ones are both sourced from installation from original floppy & CD releases of Doom2 1.666 ...
And there was a folder in both CD releases of Doom2 1.666 english & german named "DOOM2CD", where you could launch Doom2 and play it from the CD using either DOOM2.EXE or the DOOM2CD.BAT in that folder. That folder contained a DOOM2.WAD dated 8-30-94.
But when installing the game from CD, the installed DOOM2.WAD is dated 8-29-94.Kimo Xvirus 17:51, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Nintendo Switch patches with Unity port[edit]

While playing on my Switch for the past few weeks, both Doom 1 and Doom 2 have, out of nowhere, have received updates. They seem to finally restore the Nightmare skill level, along with other things that I haven't figured out yet.
