Talk:Depths of Doom Trilogy

From DoomWiki.org

From TFA:

locked versions of Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Heretic.

"Locked versions"? Could somebody expound on what that actually means? Thanks. :) -- Schnee 22:16, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

The full versions of the games are included on the disk but are encrypted by some means. The "id Store" app which is also on the disk allows a person to call 1-800-IDGAMES. The operator, after taking a suitable credit card number, will provide an unlocking code which decrypts and copies to the hard drive the normal installation files for the given game. --Quasar 22:32, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see. So the first two CD-ROMs actually contain DOOM 1 and 2, and the third contains them again, in encrypted form? Weird. -- Schnee 22:48, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
Yes. Basically, the CD's are the same as the previous retail imprints. Since they were designed to function as independent commercial products, id felt it was prudent to allow the other products to be purchased from each CD. When putting them all together for these compilation releases, it was less bother to just burn the same master images than to make new ones lacking the redundant id Store products. --Quasar 23:38, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
