Textures and sprites[edit]

I noted that althought it is very similar to the final release, the graphics and textures cannot be edited or even be looked at by using WAD editing tools like NWT or XWE. Is tere any way to edit them or just uncompress them? hfc2X 22:38, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

The WAD format for the Press Beta is not in the orthodox WAD format. To my knowledge there exists no mainstream editor that is capable of decompressing/recompressing the resources in the Press Beta WAD. I think this should be mentioned in the article, too. 13:27, September 27, 2009 (UTC)

DEUTEX can. Didn't notice the contradiction earlier, but yes, it absolutely can. I successfully used it to do just that. You have to use the -ipf pr parameter on the command line. For the Doom alphas, you use -ipf alpha. There's also -tf, -itf and -otf which can be set to normalstrife11 to manipulate textures in Strife's format. If people read the readmes (okay, the "manpage.txt") they would know this kind of stuff. --Gez 14:01, September 27, 2009 (UTC)
They may be using the older 3.6 version though though, which to my knowledge doesn't support it. I use 4.4.0 and it does the job fine. --InsanityBringer 16:38, September 27, 2009 (UTC)

Running Doom press beta in GZDoom[edit]

You can run the Doom press beta IWAD in GZDoom if you convert the Graphics to Doom format with Slade and add an empty E1M1 lump (albeit with a few bugs). Pretty cool imo. 05:41, 16 March 2013 (UTC)


This article (and the others relating to alpha releases, honestly) needs an overhaul, based on some of the information learned from the Doom 0.8 project. Stuff like the scoring, item, and message systems are in very sparse detail here. ConSiGno (talk) 15:34, 3 June 2015 (CDT)

BFG name[edit]

As I pointed out in my last edit of the article, there's a text string in the executable for when the weapon is picked up, at address 0x55220 (hex) that reads "You got the BFG9000! Oh, yes.", therefore the BFG in this version is officially the BFG9000. Hfc2x (talk) 20:48, 5 May 2019 (CDT)
