Avatar's real name

In case anybody's wondering how I found Avatar's real name (he is credited only as "Avatar" in all Memento Mori-related content,) try Googling "Avatar" and the letter-number sequence "fsm3m" (from his e-mail address in AUTHORS.TXT.) Doing so produces two QuakeDevelopers posts ([1][2]) by a "Mackey McCandlish" with a University of Virginia address using the same sequence, both signed "Avatar." Further evidence can be found by searching for "fsm3m" and either "Mackey" or "McCandlish" in Google Groups, producing Usenet posts with the same name and the same address.

Interesting.  I wonder how careful we need to be about this kind of thing (see here for a somewhat milder case that was discussed previously), given that a person does not have to be any sort of public figure in order to be mentioned on this site.    Ryan W 16:11, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
