The Subterranean River is a single-level PWAD for Heretic, designed by Keith Phipps and uploaded to the /idgames archive in September 1996. The level is set in a massive dungeon complex with various caverns, docks, underground structures, and large exteriors. It has a rather high number of enemies and is predominantly close-quartered.

Walkthrough

Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Secrets

1. In the water area at the west end with the big rock, go to the east waterfall and find a cave behind it. This cave has crystal vials, a quartz flask, and ethereal arrows. (sector 39)
2. In the room to the south of the water area, open the southeast wall and get the quiver of ethereal arrows and crystal vial. Open the west wall at the end and another wall to the west will open, revealing a Bag of Holding. (sector 42)
3. In the same room, open the northwest wall to find a shadowsphere, a Morph Ovum, a Tome of Power, a silver shield, and a teleporter to the big rock which has an energy orb and a quiver of ethereal arrows. (sector 49)
4. In the southeast room, the east wall will open when you approach it from the west. This has several golems, a quiver of ethereal arrows, an energy orb, and a pile of mace spheres. (sector 216)
5. Climb the red steps north of Secret #4 and drop to a platform below. After doing this, head back to the west hall that has the water column and head west to get a phoenix rod. (sector 222)
6. Open the green door and head left and around. One of the columns will lower, revealing a map scroll. (sector 266)
7. Keep going past Secret #6 until you enter a water room with six columns. Go through the stained glass on the north and south sides to get a Wings of Wrath, two Tomes of Power, and a Morph Ovum. (sector 287)
