The titan is a demon appearing in Doom: The Dark Ages. They were first mentioned in the lore of Doom (2016), before appearing as NPCs and background details in Doom Eternal. They are first encountered in Village of Khalim.
Tactical analysis[edit]
The Doom Slayer fights titans in a number of different ways through the course of The Dark Ages, but never uses his hand-held weapons.
In the levels Village of Khalim and Siege - Part 2, the Slayer makes use of mounted turrets to attack approaching titans. The primary fire of the turret deals damage but does nothing to stop their approach, while the secondary fire launches a blast of energy which can stagger them.
A variety of titan-class demons are fought using both Atlans and Serrat.
Atlan[edit]
All titans encountered while piloting an Atlan are capable of attacking up close using their melee weapons or claws. Ordinary and armored titans may also attack at a distance by unleashing energy shockwaves. These shockwaves travel slowly and are easily dodged, provided one is aware of them.
Three types of titans exist. All of them are introduced during the Slayer's first foray as an Atlan pilot in the Barrier Core level.
- The ordinary titan possesses no special abilities. It is not especially durable, though an armor-wearing variety occasionally appears that can absorb somewhat more punishment.
- Armored titans (not to be confused with the lesser armor-wearing titans mentioned above) are covered in full plate and carry a shield. In addition to being highly resilient, they will periodically raise their shield and infuse it with hellish energy; attempting to punch them while it is thus charged will damage the Atlan instead. Ground stomp attacks are safe to execute even against a charged shield, however, and will falter the armored titan out of its blocking stance, while the Royal Atlan's Siege Breaker finisher will altogether annihilate the demon.
- The cyclops titan, besides being fitted with some armor as well, is cybernetically enhanced to fire ocular blasts from afar, which require fairly tight timing to dodge. Other titans can be used to provide the Slayer's Atlan with cover against these attacks, although dodging them is preferable to help charge the Atlan's finisher meter.
Serrat[edit]
Like most enemies fought while riding Serrat, these titans are stationary and require locking on to using the dragon's assault mode. They attack using quick energy blasts; dodging these empowers Serrat's autocannon, allowing it to deal increased damage to the titan. Once the demon is sufficiently injured a prompt to execute it will appear, whereupon Serrat will swoop in and brutally dispatch it.
Lore[edit]
At some point in the past, the titans were once peaceful guardians of a verdant world. Despite their immense size and strength, they were unsuited for true warfare and their ranks were utterly broken by the legions of Hell. Eventually their bodies were twisted by Hell's corrupting influence, and their minds were warped by its war priests, turning them into towering engines of war for the demonic legions.

Trivia[edit]
- In the game files the armored titan is called "Serf". This name also appeared in one of the frames of the Xbox developer deep-dive, where the whiteboard was leaked with a list of monster names, which includes the serf.[1]
