A tyrant firing upon the player.
The tyrant is a monster added to Doom and Doom II by the Legacy of Rust expansion and is further specified within the ID24 editing standard. It is a slightly (about 10%) smaller variant of the cyberdemon, without horns or cybernetic legs, and with green wires.
Combat characteristics[edit]
The tyrant is a weaker cyberdemon, with only one fourth of the hit points, making it similar to other recolored weaker cyberdemon enemies as seen for example in the Wormwood series. Its sounds are slightly faster and higher pitched than those of the cyberdemon.
There are three separate versions of the tyrant, allowing to use several groups of them with different boss death effects. The three versions are identical mechanically, except that the latter two variants have a longer respawn time in Nightmare! difficulty, making them more suited as boss monsters for this skill level.
Tactical analysis[edit]
The tyrant behaves similarly to the cyberdemon in combat, firing volleys of three rockets. Despite its closeness with the cyberdemon, it can infight with its stronger cousin.
- In Legacy of Rust, the tyrants have editor numbers of 3012, 3013, and 3014, and use the MT_EXTRA05 / Deh_Actor_155, MT_EXTRA06 / Deh_Actor_156, and MT_EXTRA07 / Deh_Actor_157 slots. The data below corresponds to the ID24 specifications.

Damage done by a full rocket volley
- This table assumes that all calls to P_Random for damage, pain chance, blood splats, and bullet dispersal are consecutive. In real play, this is never the case: counterattacks and AI pathfinding must be handled, and of course the map may contain additional moving monsters and other randomized phenomena (such as flickering lights). Any resulting errors are probably toward the single-shot average, as they introduce noise into the correlation between the indices of "consecutive" calls.
- Assumes that the target takes a direct hit from each shot.
- Assumes that direct hits are possible, which does not occur in any stock map.
