Template map links[edit]

Hi, I'd really appreciate it if you start using the {{maplinkgen}} (or at least {{ml}}) template to prevent copy-paste errors and malformed paths. Everyone makes mistakes, I make mistakes too, that's okay and not why I'm writing, but these templates at least help significantly reduce the chance of some types of mistakes. I sometimes catch a mistake before it does much damage (like the former example), but the latter one in particular wasted more than half an hour of my time to start over with clean pages & map views and related fixes. Thanks. --Xymph (talk) 07:43, 15 January 2021 (CST)

My apologies for the errors, I will start using the new template as you request, thanks for the heads up! And btw, thanks for cleaning up the articles, I try to double-check everything but it seems more mistakes than I wanted have slipped through... --Dynamo128 (talk) 07:46, 15 January 2021 (CST)
I understand, that happens to everyone from time to time. And if I catch them in time, it's of little concern. Unfortunately that didn't happen with Estranged. --Xymph (talk) 09:35, 15 January 2021 (CST)
Oh, on that note, MAP31 of Biowar also has an unfortunate typo on it, it's supposed to be Juggalo but is instead Juggelo. My bad, that was from long ago. --Dynamo128 (talk) 07:48, 15 January 2021 (CST)
Biowar.wad has no maps list (in biowar.txt or mapinfo/dehacked lump) so the CWILV30 lump is leading, which spells it Juggelo Funhouse. So no worries. :) --Xymph (talk) 09:35, 15 January 2021 (CST)

Refreshing the reminder to please use the maplinkgen template. You were doing well til and including Paradise... ;) --Xymph (talk) 13:11, 6 October 2021 (CDT)

I have avoided the maplinkgen template for a few unusual cases, but looking back, even the few outliers recently such as BGP and Serpent: Resurrection could have used it (for the latter, I wasn't sure how to organize it, until I found out there were no multiple hubs after I had written the article). Thanks for the reminder. --Dynamo128 (talk) 13:52, 6 October 2021 (CDT)

Hi, why would you revert what was already confirmed elsewhere and checked by an editor (i.e. me, but that's not the reason I'm writing)? --Xymph (talk) 10:00, 21 August 2021 (CDT)

Because the edit itself is nonsensical. I'm not saying it's not worth elaborating on the texture or the story behind it, but saying "it's not sure what he is king of" is IMO one step away from vandalism, as far as I am concerned, because "tom is king" means nothing more than "tom is great", and adding "sorry, king of what?" is either a joke or, like I said, vandalism. While I did find it a bit curious that you approved the message, my understanding was, as you seem to be confirming, that you wanted more information regarding the texture's meaning, but this is not the way to do about it, as far as I am concerned, and if I see content that approaches vandalism, I'd opt for its removal regardless of who checked it. I should also mention that the user who made the edit has apparently been banned for trolling elsewhere, and I see several other edits by them have been reverted. --Dynamo128 (talk) 13:22, 21 August 2021 (CDT)
I see. While I agree some other edits by MT were vandalous or of sub-par quality, calling this edit "one step away from vandalism" seems too strong a verdict to me. And I don't follow (nor care much for) what users do elsewhere, it's their behavior on the wiki that matters on the wiki. But yeah, if the meaning of the texture is expanded upon, there are probably better ways to do that, from scratch. --Xymph (talk) 14:15, 21 August 2021 (CDT)

Title screens[edit]

Hi, when uploading title screens, please include the additional category which I now have to add every time... Thanks. --Xymph (talk) 10:31, 4 October 2021 (CDT)

Of course. is there a way to add it directly when uploading the file, or do I have to edit the submission after it has been uploaded? --Dynamo128 (talk) 10:32, 4 October 2021 (CDT)
That is one way yeah. But in the upload Summary form field, one can also put the entire page contents, without selecting a license from the drop-down list, and including the extra category, like this:
== Summary ==
Titlepic lump of [[]], scaled up to correct aspect ratio.
== Licensing ==
[[Category:Title screens]]
Fill in the main article name, and submit. Another tip is to check Recent Changes for edits to your own contributions and thus learn how to improve them on initial submission. KUTGW. --Xymph (talk) 10:48, 4 October 2021 (CDT)

Beyond Reality[edit]

The initial page is somewhat below par: the idgames zip is old but contains a "Read this first!!.txt" pointing to ZDforums pointing to the official page with a v1.71 pk3 from Feb 2019 as the latest version. It renames map19 to 00, contains bonus maps 16-20, and a mapinfo grouping the maps into 3-level episodes (although those don't seem to be visible in the game, so not sure if the wiki should mimic that). There's also a dwforums thread (60969). Could you work all that into the article? Thanks. --Xymph (talk) 07:26, 11 October 2021 (CDT)

Will do. Regarding the MAPINFO thing, it is indeed grouped under episodes even in the old version but only in the comments, so I chose not to have the wiki reflect that when writing the page... not sure if that should be changed or not, I'll leave that up to you to decide, but I'll work on everything else you've said. --Dynamo128 (talk) 07:33, 11 October 2021 (CDT)

Exit to secret levels[edit]

You were pretty quick there to undo my change. Didn't even have time to correct it myself. Is it not allowed to note down which levels have exits to secret levels? I've been using this wiki primarily to ensure I don't skip a secret level in other mods. Was surprised to see Ashes 2063 doesn't specify it and wanted to fix that. Why the undo? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eqagunn (talkcontribs) .

Hello! The reason I reverted it is because the level you marked as being the first secret level was not, in fact, the first secret level you can reach in the game. Plus, we tend to use a different way of noting it down, as you can see with my latest edit, in cases where the secret level exits aren't just located on MAP15 and MAP31. Hope that clears it up! --Dynamo128 (talk) 15:41, 17 August 2022 (CDT)
Thank you for adding both secret exits. Ashes Afterglow would need the same treatment if you are willing. All the best. --Eqagunn (talk) 15:55, 17 August 2022 (CDT)

Does MAP05 even have a regular exit? It only has linedefs with special 244 (secret exit), none with 243 (normal). --Xymph (talk) 16:03, 17 August 2022 (CDT)

Okay, I guess I should have searched the SCRIPT lump sooner, to find this and prevent that little back and forth:
script 21 (void)
LocalAmbientSound("spotlight", 127);
Light_ChangeToValue (36, 220);
Light_ChangeToValue (37, 170);
Exit_Normal (0);

Thanks for showing me how that edit worked. MargaretThatcher (talk) 20:08, 6 September 2022 (CDT)

Replacing images[edit]

If you replace a fair-use image, please mark the old one with a deletion nomination; otherwise they're going to get lost in the sea of files. --Quasar (talk) 01:05, 13 December 2022 (CST)

Sure thing. In cases such as those, would speedy delete or normal delete be more appropriate? --Dynamo128 (talk) 03:36, 13 December 2022 (CST)
Speedy, already done. But why don't you simply upload them as a new version on top of the old, poor quality one? And optionally just tweak its summary. That saves work: no edit of the main article, no tagging of the old image, and no deletion a few months later. --Xymph (talk) 03:41, 13 December 2022 (CST)
I figured it was a good idea to free up space on images like that by deleting them outright rather than keeping them around as an older and superseded file. But I guess on second thought it's small enough where it doesn't matter. --Dynamo128 (talk) 03:43, 13 December 2022 (CST)
Deleted images remain on the file system and can be restored by an admin. So no savings there. --Xymph (talk) 04:15, 13 December 2022 (CST)
Oof, had no idea about that... Apologies, then. --Dynamo128 (talk) 04:19, 13 December 2022 (CST)

About the Absolution maps canundrum[edit]

Sorry for the other night i was a bit abrasive. I understand why you decided not to add more of the already existing map. I respect your decision. I guess i just really felt like documenting stuff. :P Cheers. David —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk)

It's ok, like I said, we appreciate your enthusiasm. I just wanted to make sure you understand that we do in fact have articles for the maps in question, they just use different slots because they originate from that TC. If there was any information you wanted to add regarding them, feel free to do so in their respective pages. :) --Dynamo128 (talk) 15:00, 18 January 2023 (CST)

Doom music covers[edit]

Hi, a couple of days ago I edited the Doom music covers page to include the remakes by Pieces of 8-bit and links to the respective music mods for the games.

But I am not sure it worked since I did not get any confirmation email or message. The page said the edit has to be confirmed by an editor. Can you tell me if this process is currently ongoing or if my original edit did not work and I have to redo it?

Have a nice day! --Xerardo 17:45, 03 June 2023 (CET)

Hi, can you link the relevant page? --Dynamo128 (talk) 13:31, 3 June 2023 (CDT)
