Raw sprites[edit]

Sorry but we don't allow raw sprites on the site, please do not upload any more. --Quasar (talk) 16:45, 3 October 2022 (CDT)

May I ask why? That is horribly strange to me. --Zippy (talk) 20:13, 3 October 2022 (CDT)
Raw graphics lumps taken directly from a copyrighted source are not allowed. See those two pages for more info. --Xymph (talk) 02:32, 4 October 2022 (CDT)
The reasoning is related to fair use. There are strong justified fair use cases for things like screenshots (transformative, somewhat unique in terms of positioning/composition, not strictly a part of the game itself but representative of its presentation, can't be used to directly replicate the game in most cases, etc). Most of these do not apply to resources directly extracted from the game. Some wikis have chosen to allow them despite that, we have historically not done so. Hope that helps. --Quasar (talk) 08:55, 4 October 2022 (CDT)
Sorry, I should've asked first. Am I allowed to upload animated screenshots? Zippy (talk) 11:55, 4 October 2022 (CDT)
That would be OK although the only reason those have been used so far is to illustrate things that require it, such as some created by Linguica that show how seg masking works by stepping through the renderer line-by-line, or to illustrate certain bugs in action that occur across multiple frames. I'd suggest restraining their use to where it's required as such and not just using them for decorative purposes if that makes sense. --Quasar (talk) 18:32, 4 October 2022 (CDT)
