Three vassagos attacking the player.
The vassago is a monster added to Doom and Doom II by the Legacy of Rust expansion and is further specified within the ID24 editing standard. It is a fire-themed demon, and serves as the main enemy force in the storyline.
Combat characteristics[edit]
A vassago emits a snarling roar when sighting the player. With one thousand hit points, it is as tough as a baron of Hell or a tyrant. When defeated, a vassago combusts near entirely, leaving only its skull head and a heap of ashes behind.
Tactical analysis[edit]
The vassago behaves mostly like a baron of Hell, having the same speed and size, and taking the same time to attack. It has a higher pain chance than the baron, but recovers from pain more quickly. The main particularity of the vassago is that the flames it throws keep burning on the ground at the point of impact, dealing radius damage. This allows the vassago to play a role of area denial. However, it also makes it useful for inciting infighting.
The vassago flames after impact burn for 132 tics (3.77 seconds), dealing damage in a wide area (128 radius) every twelve tics, ten times in total, from the moment of impact to 108 tics after impact.
While the vassago bears some resemblance to a Hell noble, it will infight with Hell knights and barons.
- Vassago is the name of a demon prince from classical occultism, appearing in the Lesser Key of Solomon.
- The vassago sprites were drawn by Dakota Cann from id Software.
- The vassago's roaming sound, DSVASACT, is the same stock sound as the generic demon pain sound in the Sony PlayStation port of Doom, and other Doom titles that used the PSX Doom soundscape (such as Doom 64).
- In Legacy of Rust, the vassago has an editor number of 3011 and uses the MT_EXTRA04 / Deh_Actor_154 slot. The data below corresponds to the ID24 specifications.
