Venturous: In the Footsteps of the Fallen, or simply Venturous, is a total conversion megawad for Doom II and the GZDoom source port, created by PixelFox and originally released on September 18, 2023. Heavily inspired by the Indiana Jones franchise, Venturous sees the player take on the role of an explorer on a mission trailing Nazi agents across the world, as they attempt to retrieve ancient artifacts to help them win World War II. Venturous features all new enemies, weapons and objects, as the player wields a combination of period firearms and fantasy weapons while battling Nazi agents and undead creatures from temples in Mesoamerica, Egypt, and beyond.

Venturous received an honorable mention at the 2023 Cacowards.

Enemies[edit]

Human enemies[edit]

Private
The lowest tier Nazi soldier, it is armed with a Luger pistol and may occasionally drop stimpacks on death. It has 20 hit points (thing type 15007).
Private with a torch
The same as the regular private, only carrying a torch to illuminate darker areas, which it also drops on death. It has 20 hit points (type 15008).
Private with a rifle
A stronger private wielding a Kar98k rifle. It has 40 hit points (type 15021).
Corporal
Nazi soldier clad in dark uniform armed with an MP 40. It has 70 hit points (type 15003). A variant that rappels down from the ceiling exists, with 80 hit points (type 15056).
Ahnenerbe agent
Plainclothed agents of the Nazi parascientific organization, these foes are armed with an MP40 and have 80 hit points (type 15055).
Machinegunner
Bulky, heavily armored Nazi soldiers wearing a black uniform and a gas mask. They carry an MG 42 and sport 100 hit points (type 15002).
Flamethrower soldier
Similar to the heavy soldier in appearance, these hulking troops carry a flamethrower and large fuel backpack. They have 300 hit points and explode violently upon death (type 15035).
Panzerschreck trooper
Large soldiers carrying a Panzerschreck (rocket launcher) weapon, they have 140 hit points (type 15009).
Officer
Nazi officers carry an MP 40, but are also able to use paranormal magic to launch fireballs at the player. They have 200 hit points (type 15006).
Kriegsmariner
Elite troops for amphibious operations, these soldiers are clad in a navy blue uniform and carry a Kar98k as well as hand grenades. They have 100 hit points (type 15044).
Paratrooper
Nazi paratroopers armed with a FG 42 and hand grenades. They have 100 hit points and come in a version that falls off ledges (type 15061) and one that does not (type 15053).
Medjay rifleman
Part of a band of arab gunmen, this foe is armed with a Kar98k and has 40 hit points (type 15041).
Medjay shotgunner
A somewhat stronger gunman, this time armed with a shotgun and with 70 hit points (type 15022).
Medjay machinegunner
A heavier gunman armed with a Lewis automatic machinegun, it has 130 hit points (type 15039).
Medjay shifter
This enemy carries a khopesh and possesses supernatural abilities, like being able to gain a large speed boost as well as launching magic fireballs at the player. They have 150 hit points (type 15040).
Medjay Leader
The leader of the gang, he is armed with a rifle but does not attack the player (type 15045).
Japanese rifleman
Japanese privates armed with an Arisaka rifle and bayonet. They will charge at the player for a melee attack if within close range. They have 30 hit points (type 15109).
Japanese winter rifleman
The same as the normal Japanese rifleman, but with winter attire. They have 30 hit points (type 15100).
Japanese submachinegunner
Japanese sergeants carrying a Type 100 submachine gun and Type 97 grenades. They will also roll left or right when attacked to dodge incoming fire. They have 70 hit points (type 15103).
Japanese machinegunner
Bulky, heavily armored Japanese soldiers wearing a green uniform and a gas mask. They carry an Nambu machinegun and sport 100 hit points (type 15101).
Black Dragon officer
Japanese officers carrying a flare gun and shin gunto sword. They have 150 hit points (type 15102).
Super heavy machinegunner
Super heavily armored Japanese soldiers who carry heavy machine guns. While firing, they will rotate their aim in a small angle around the target. They have 650 hit points (type 15116).
Collaborator with a torch
Chinese collaborator with a C96 and a torch. Unlike the Nazi private with a torch, the collaborator with a torch can throw the torch. They have 40 hit points (type 15110).
Collaborator with a shotgun
Chinese collaborator with a shotgun. They will dodge roll when attacked. They have 70 hit points (type 15111).
Japanese flamethrower soldier
The same as the Nazi flamethrower soldier, but in attire that matches the Japanese uniforms. They have 300 hit points and explode violently upon death (type 15128).
Triad member
A Chinese triad member with a Thompson submachine gun. The will continuously fire in three round bursts until line of sight is broken. They have 75 hit points (type 15125).
Triad brute
A large Chinese triad member who will sprint towards their target and punch them with great knockback. They can also toss Type97 grenades. They have 250 hit points and their corpse remains collidable after death (type 15126).
Triad wushu swordsman
A Chinese triad member with two swords. They will leap and dodge roll great distances. They have 350 hit points (type 15134).
Fireworks smuggler
A Chinese collaborator with a box of fireworks. They run around and will hold the firework box above their head before shooting 5 inaccurately aimed flares. They can dodge roll when attacked. They have 80 HP (type 15127).
Knife sailor
A Chinese sailor from the past. They are armed with a knife which they can use to stab their target or throw the knife at the target. They can dodge roll when attacked. They have 50 HP (type 15130).
Barrel sailor
A very tall Chinese sailor from the past carrying a barrel on their shoulder. They can throw the barrel which can bounce a few times. They will also guard with their barrel when attacked which blocks damage and can reflect certain projectiles. They have 500 HP (type 15136).
Living NuBing archer
A Chinese Nu Bing archer from the past. They will continuously fire bolts from their crossbow until line of sight is broken. They have 100 hit points (type 15131).

Monsters[edit]

Reanimated private
A zombified Nazi private, attacking the player at melee range with its fists. It has 50 hit points and comes in an active variant (type 15027) and an ambush one (type 15050).
Reanimated corporal
A zombified Nazi soldier, carrying an MP 40 which, however, it solely uses to attack the player at melee range, as if it were a hammer. It has 75 hit points (type 15026).
Conquistador
A reanimated conquistador skeleton, attacking the player with melee swipes. It has 50 hit points (type 15001).
Former tomb robber
A reanimated husk of a fellow tomb robber, it is armed with a shotgun. It has 60 hit points (type 14888).
Ocelotl
Fast moving demonic guardian armed with a macuahuitl and carrying a shield. It has 150 hit points (type 15005).
Cuauhtli
A monster wielding dual axes, which it throws at the player. It has 80 hit points (type 15010).
Jade guardian
A hulking demon made of pure jade, it is able to fire several projectiles at the player in a manner similar as the mancubus. It has 750 hit points (type 15016).
Ritual master
A humanoid figure, clothed like a sacrificial priest, with an attack similar to the arch-vile. It has 700 hit points (type 15017).
Mictlantecutli zealot
A demonic figure with long limbs and sacrificial priest clothing. It can rapidly stab the player with its sacrificial knife and launch revenant projectiles from a distance. It has 700 hit points (type 15052).
Royal guard
Fast moving demonic guardian armed with a khopesh and carrying a shield. It has 150 hit points (type 15000).
Mummy
Mummified corpses reanimated, these monsters move slowly but pack a powerful punch in melee combat. They come in two variants, one that emerges from the ground and has 50 hit points (type 15029), and another that moves faster, can jump at the player and has 80 hit points (type 14999).
Archer
These monsters utilize a bow and arrow to strike at the player from a distance. They have 70 hit points (type 15036).
Anubite
Giant warriors in the shape of Anubis, they have a powerful melee attack with their swords and can also fire revenant projectiles. They have 300 hit points and come in a standard variant (type 15023) and one that camouflages itself as a statue (type 15034).
Egyptian harbinger
Floating, skeletal pharaohs with the ability to summon volleys of two cacodemon fireballs. They have 400 hit points (type 15038).
High priest
Enormous pharaohs with an attack similar to the arch-vile, they have 800 hit points (type 15037).
Former Ottoman soldier
A reanimated corpse of a soldier of the Ottoman Empire, carrying a Kar98k rifle. It has 60 hit points (type 15063).
Hoplite
Fast moving skeleton guardian armed with a sword and carrying a shield. It is also able to jump at the player. It has 200 hit points (type 15057).
Epilektoi
A skeletal warrior utilizing thrown javelins against the player, and having 150 hit points (type 15060).
Cyclops
A tall, one-eyed monster that is slow and lumbering but can hurl giant rocks at the player. It has 500 hit points (type 15058).
Greek harbinger
Similar to its Egyptian counterpart, but with a different helmet design, and 300 hit points (type 15062).
Drakaina
A monstrous serpentine demon wearing a mask, which it can take off to attack the player, and a trident used to fire revenant projectiles. It has 800 hit points (type 15064).
Legionaire
A fast moving, armored skeletal warrior carrying a large sword. It has 150 hit points (type 15030).
Evocatus
A large skeletal warrior carrying an enormous shield and wielding an energy spear, which is able to fire continuously at the player. It has 300 hit points (type 15028).
Drowner
The reanimated body of a man in a diving suit, this monstrous human is able to attack the player in a similar manner as the arch-vile, and has 500 hit points (type 15031).
Automaton
A robotic creation with blue fire engulfing its head, this automaton can launch magical orbs at the player in volleys of three. It has 600 hit points (type 15032).
Atlantean harbinger
Similar to its Egyptian and Greek counterparts, but with a different helmet design, and 300 hit points (type 15033).
Abomination
A hulking skeleton with a deep blue fire burning in its core, it is able to fire several large fireballs up in the air which then rain down on the player, followed by a rapid lunge towards the player's position allowing the abomination to perform a melee strike. Has 500 hit points (type 15046).
Immortal
A very large armored skeleton with a huge lance which can fire multiple projectiles. It is also able to resurrect fallen foes, and has 700 hit points (type 15051).
Frozen tomb raider
A reanimated husk similar to the former tomb robber, but in winter attire. It has 60 hit points (type 15105).
Preta hungry ghost
A crawling skeleton who will lunge at its targets and breath fire. While it is idle, it will eat scraps on the ground. It has 40 hit points. A quiet variant exists which does not make eating noises while idle (type 15104 and 15115).
Tulpa
A floating white and red figure wearing a mask. It fires revenant missiles, some of which are homing. It has 300 hit points (type 15107).
Frost wraith
A flying skeletal wraith that charges like a lost soul. It has 30 hit points (type 15112).
Yeti
A hulking beast with white fur and bloody claws. It will slash its targets, lunge at them, and throw boulders. It has 600 hit points (type 15106).
Ascended officer
A floating, glowing, ghostly Black Dragon officer. They an do an attack the pushes the target away, fire mancubus fireballs, and shoot a mana ball. They have 750 hit points (type 15132).
Terra cotta warrior
A clay warrior with a spear. It has 100 hit points and upon death may spawn a headless version with an additional 70 hit points or a torsoless version with 50 hit points. The third version that is only legs does not attack (type 15108, 15117, 15118).
NuBing archer
An undead Chinese archer. They will continuously fire bolts from their crossbow until line of sight is broken. They have 70 hit points (type 15119).
Jiangshi
An skeleton in tradition Chinese attire. They hop along and attack similar to the arch-vile including resurrecting dead enemies. They have 350 hit points (type 15122).
General
A large, ancient Chinese general. They carry a large sword which can fires red energy blasts at their target. They will also summon Ghostly falcons. They have 900 hit points (type 15123).
Spirit falcon
An orange ghostly falcon which charges at their target and attacks them with their talons. They have 30 hit points (type 15129).

Minibosses[edit]

Maxotaur
This massive minotaur carries a giant hammer, which it uses to fire energy blasts at the player. It can also charge at the player or use its fiery breath at close distances. It has 1600 hit points (type 15054).
Unquiet King
A semi-translucent spirit of a skeletal king, hovering over the ground and launching multiple energy waves at the player. It has 1000 hit points (type 15065).
Specthreal
A ghostly explorer armed with a levergun. They will fire two shots from the levergun, throw torches, toss dynamite, and push their target away. When attacked, they can dodge roll or jump to the side. They have 500 hit points and drop a jacket on death (type 15133).

Bosses[edit]

Mictlantecutli
A colossal red demon dressed like an Aztec priest, it can use its massive macuahuitl sword to strike the ground, spawning several mancubus and revenant projectiles towards the player. It has 5000 hit points (type 15025).
Atlantean Demon
The final boss of the game, a gigantic demon clad in Atlantean armor capable of striking the player with a multitude of different energy attacks. It has 6000 hit points (type 15049).

Other[edit]

Scorpion
A harmless scorpion that moves aimlessly (type 15042).
Spider
A harmless spider that climbs on walls and ceilings (type 15120).
Crab
A harmless crab that climbs on walls (type 22368).
Snake
This one is not harmless. The snake will leap at the player if the player gets too close. It has 20 hit points and does not count towards the kill count. Comes in green or brown variants (type 15138 and 15139).

Weapons[edit]

Webley and machete
The starting weapon combination, the revolver fires powerful rounds but at a slow rate, and the machete is the go-to hand-to-hand weapon in the early stages of the game (thing type 12405). Utilizes .455 bullets.
Torch
The torch is a unique weapon in that it can be paired with other weapons, mainly the revolver, the luger, the C96, and the MP 40. It can be used to illuminate dark areas, but it can also be thrown as a ranged weapon. Up to ten torches can be carried (type 12404).
Luger
A lighter pistol than the webley, with less damage per shot but a considerably higher rate of fire (type 12414). Utilizes 9mm bullets. Does not appear in any map.
C96
Another light pistol with a very high rate of fire, similar to the Luger. Can be paired with the torch or Shin Gunto sword (type 12423). Utilizes 9mm bullets.
Type94 pistol
A pistol similar to the C96, but with lower rate of fire. It can be paired with a Shin Gunto sword or a torch (type 12504 and 12504). Utilizes 9mm bullets. Does not appear in any map.
C96 Akimbo
A pair of C96's which boasts a high rate of fire. The alternate fire will fire one of the guns sideways in a sweeping fashion (type 12520). Utilizes 9mm bullets.
Levergun
A lever-action shotgun with a fairly high rate of fire, and two alternate firing modes. It can be paired with a torch in MAP15 (type 12402) or used while carrying Mr. Li. Utilizes shells.
Double-barreled shotgun
Twice as powerful as the regular shotgun, it can fire both of its barrels simultaneously or one at a time with its alt-fire (type 12409). Utilizes shells.
MP 40
The most common submachine gun in the game, this weapon provides a decent rate of fire whilst utilizing the same ammo type as the pistols. Can be used with a torch (type 12400) or without (type 12441). Utilizes 9mm bullets.
Vampir
A heavily modified MP 40, with a very large scope attached to it (type 12415). Utilizes 9mm bullets. Does not appear in any map.
Thompson
A different submachine gun used by the US army, with good rate of fire (type 12444). Utilizes .455 bullets.
Type100
Another submachine gun that performs very similarly to the MP 40, except it comes equipped with a bayonet (type 12501). Utilizes 9mm bullets.
Kar-98k rifle
A commonly wielded weapon by Nazi troops, this rifle has a quite high damage output despite the low rate of fire, and its alt-fire can be used to look down its scope to increase accuracy (type 12406). Utilizes rifle cartridges.
Arisaka
A Japanese rifle that performs just like the Kar-98k rifle including the ability to aim down the sight (type 12503). Utilizes rifle cartridges.
MG 42
A heavy machinegun that can be fired faster when utilizing the alt-fire mode (type 12401). Utilizes rifle cartridges.
Lewis automatic machinegun
A heavy machinegun, very similar to the MG 42 with a very slightly higher damage output, but has no alt-fire mode unlike the former (type 12418). Utilizes rifle cartridges.
FG 42 paratrooper rifle
This slow but powerful rifle is one of the few weapons to require reloading (type 12440). Utilizes rifle cartridges. Only available in a secret.
Nambu machinegun
A light machine gun which comes equipped with a bayonet (type 12514). Utilizes rifle cartridges.
Panzerschreck
A large and powerful rocket launcher very effective against massed foes or larger targets (type 12403). Utilizes rockets.
Flamethrower
Powerful weapon capable of firing jets of fire quite rapidly, but care must be taken as the fire will damage the player too (type 12446). Has its own ammo type.
Flarepistol
A triple barreled flare gun that can fire one or three flares at a time. The flares will explode on impact with enemies or after a short amount of time when hitting a surface (type 12500). Utilizes flares.
Type4 launcher
A rocket launcher similar to the panzerschreck (type 12515). Utilizes rockets.
Khopesh
An enchanted, ancient Egyptian sword that can be used to launch magical waves at enemy forces, or be used in melee with its alt-fire (type 12408). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Incandescent Ranseur
A powerful magical weapon, able to fire homing orbs either in quick succession or in bursts (type 12407). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Gastraphete
A magical crossbow which can either fire one single, very powerful bolt, or three of them in multiple directions (type 12443). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Enchanted Jezail
A magically-enhanced rifle which fires very powerful railgun-like energy blasts, and can also be aimed down similarly to the K98 (type 12411). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Macuahuitl
An enchanted, ancient Aztec sword that can be used to launch a magical skull, which shatters into multiple devastating fireballs when fired. It can also be used in melee mode (type 12422). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Yeti hand
A skeletal hand that rapidly shoots ice balls which can freeze enemies. Frozen enemies can be shattered with other attacks, or its alt-fire will shatter all frozen enemies at once (type 12511). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Chu ko nu
An ancient Chinese crossbow with with a crank handle that fires flaming bolts. The rate of fire starts slow, but increases as it is continuously fired. The alternate fire will shoot three bolts at a time at a lower rate of fire (type 12519). Utilizes fire bolts for ammo.
Huochong hand cannon
An ancient cannon that is lit with a lighter. The primary fire shoots a primary explosive and several inaccurate flare-like explosives. The secondary fire shoots one slow moving energy ball that can bounce off of surfaces (type 12518). Utilizes mana for ammo.
Dynamite
These sticks of dynamite can be lit using a lighter and then thrown, either to explode after a certain time or on impact, depending on alt-fire (type 12413). Utilizes TNT ammo.
Stick grenade
Standard war grenades, that can also be made to explode after a certain time or on impact (type 12424). Utilizes TNT ammo.
Type97 grenade
A Japanese grenade that functions the same as the dynamite and stick grenade (type 12509). Utilizes TNT ammo.

Items[edit]

The mod utilizes different types of ammunition for the various weapons, as listed above. Below is a list of other items present in the mod:

Full health medikit
Restores the player's health up to 100, no matter how wounded they are (thing type 22350).
Healing sprite
The game's equivalent of the health bonus, looking like one such vial engulfed by a blue fire. Restores 2 hit points (type 22247).
Fedora
The explorer's hat, provides 20 points of armor (type 22262).
Jacket
The explorer's jacket, providing 50 points of armor at 33% protection (type 22260).
Enchanted jacket
Much more valuable is the enchanted jacket, as it provides 100 points of armor at 50% protection (type 22261).
Idol
Comes in two variants, one with a blue haze around it which heals 100 hit points (types 22321, 22323, 22342, 22325, 18013, and 18015), and another without the haze that heals 200 and also adds 200 armor (type 22320, 22322, 22343, 22324, and 18014).
Faster fire rate
A powerup which doubles the player's fire rate for 25 seconds (type 22344).
Journal map
An item that marks an area on the automap. The markers typically lead to a secret containing a permanent healing sprite (type 22370).
Permanent healing sprite
A light blue healing sprite that permanently increases the player's max hit points by 5 and heals the player to the new maximum (type 10830).

Objects[edit]

Quetzalcoatl fire trap
These faces of the Aztec deity are attached to walls and periodically launch balls of fire (type 15019).
Switchable torch
This torch can be activated to light up a dark area (types 22220 and 22221).
Lion statue turret
A statue of a lion that continuously fires flaming arrows while the player is within their line of sight (type 15121).
