Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows is a product line of operating systems by Microsoft, beginning with the release of Windows 1.0, based upon MS-DOS. The Windows Kernel continued to be based upon DOS with Windows 9x.[1] This was until the release of Windows NT operating systems, which began with Windows NT 3.1. Windows NT was marketed towards enterprise users until the release of Windows XP.

Microsoft created the first port of Doom to Windows with the release of Doom95. After the release of the Doom source code several source ports to Windows appeared, including ATB Doom, WinDoom, and NTDOOM. Nightdive Studios, in cooperation with id Software, has developed the Doom Classic Unity port and Doom + Doom II, including the Windows versions.

Since the release of Quake II, Microsoft Windows has been the primary operating system for id Software's projects. Doom 3 was originally released for Windows, later seeing Linux, Mac OS X, and Xbox ports. Both Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal released on Windows and several consoles, with no native Linux or macOS ports.

Several games that licensed the Doom engine have native re-releases for Windows: Strife with Strife: Veteran Edition, Hexen with Hexen95, Doom 64 with the 2020 re-release, and Killing Time based on Jaguar Doom, plus on KEX Engine with Killing Time: Resurrected. DOSBox has been included in several re-releases, which allow the original DOS executable for the game to run on Windows.

Source ports running on Windows[edit]

Several source ports only support Windows, or have it as the primary operating system, with most being able to run under Wine. This has lessened over recent years, with most current source ports supporting Linux and macOS also.
